- *Boston Blue* was renewed for a second season in December 2025.

- The spinoff's next chapter will find Danny in a leadership position and Lena further exploring her relationship with her biological father.

- Season 2 will premiere during CBS' 2026-2027 primetime lineup.

*Blue Bloods* was canceled in 2023 after 14 seasons, but fans of the popular CBS crime procedural didn't have to wait long to see some of their favorite characters back onscreen.

In October 2025, CBS debuted *Boston Blue*, a spinoff focusing on Donnie Wahlberg's Danny Reagan, the hot-headed detective son of Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan. The series follows Danny as he relocates to Boston, where his son, Sean (Mika Amonsen), is now a patrol officer with the Boston Police Department.

At first, Danny isn’t just looking for a change of scenery: He’s there to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding a building fire that injured Sean. Danny teams up with Det. Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), who belongs to a law dynasty similar to Danny's back in New York, and soon carves out a niche for himself in Beantown. By season's end, he's looking to climb the ranks of the BPD alongside the Silvers.

Fans have been loving *Boston Blue,* and thankfully it was renewed for a second season. Here’s everything we know about it so far.

Will there be a second season of Boston Blue?

Yes, *Boston Blue* was officially renewed for a second season in December 2025.

“Two new shows on Friday night have become instant hits, with audiences quickly embracing *Boston Blue* and *Sheriff Country *across broadcast and streaming,” CBS boss Amy Reisenbach said in a statement.

How did Boston Blue season 1 end?

The season 1 finale of *Boston Blue* brings the core ensemble together when Lena is shot in the line of duty. She survives the attack, which occurs while she’s investigating a prison contraband smuggling ring, but is left with a punctured lung and nerve damage.

While in the hospital, she finally meets her biological father, Chris (Erik King), whom her mother, Mae (Gloria Reuben), long sought to keep out of Lena’s life. Lena wants a relationship with Chris and his daughter — her half-sister, Kristina (Alisha Wainwright) — and all three later come together for dinner at the Silvers’ home.

Mae, the Boston district attorney, is gearing up for election season, which she knows is going to “get ugly.” An unscrupulous political opponent, Thad Longfellow (Ward Horton), is more than willing to sling mud in order to take her seat. Her secret relationship with Judge Elijah Robinson (Harry J. Lennix) could become problematic if the pair isn’t careful.

Elsewhere, Danny and Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) commit to their relationship as he contemplates taking the sergeant’s exam, finally embracing the idea of a leadership role in law enforcement.

The episode ends on one heck of a cliffhanger. Det. Brian Rodgers (Ryan Broussard), Lena’s boyfriend, is blindsided on his way to the Silvers’ for dinner when a truck slams into his car, sending it into the Charles River. It’s unclear whether Brian survives — and who was behind the wheel — but the crash is sure to send shockwaves through the Silvers next season.

Speaking with ** ahead of the season 1 finale, showrunners Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier offered several teases of what to expect in season 2.

Lena's relationships with Chris and Kristina will be a focus, with Sonnier addressing the ways their presence impacts Lena. "What does it look like to get to know someone that you were supposed to know your whole life?" he asks. "What does it look like to introduce a new biological sister when you are so very close to your stepsister? How do those new triangles and relationship dynamics work?"

But there's a darker side to the story as well, as Margolis says that there "could be other consequences" that Lena didn't anticipate when opening this door into her past.

You can also expect Mae's political fight against Thad to be a big part of what's to come. "It's cool to us how the stakes of the district attorney's office affect everybody else," Sonnier says. "If somebody else is in that chair, how Boston PD does their job is greatly influenced. So, a guy like Thad in that seat would have an effect on everybody."

And it could get personal for the Silvers. "[Mae] is quite literally not just protecting the throne, but she's protecting her kids," he adds.

Danny’s shift into a leadership position is of particular interest to the showrunners, who are excited to see how the longtime detective fares when he’s not cracking heads on the street. “What does it look like for Danny Reagan to be in charge of people? What does it look like for Danny Reagan to have to answer to the hierarchy in a different way?” Sonnier asks. “He can’t be the slightly reckless, ‘I’ll answer to nobody’ detective he’s always been — so what does it look like when he’s got to point a finger at somebody doing what he would do and say, ‘Hey, we can’t do it that way’?”

Danny's new role will also impact Sean. "He moved to Boston to get out from under the shadow of the Reagan family," Margolis explains. "His dad is here, which he loves, but he's still trying to carve his own path and to show he's worthy of the Reagan name."

Margolis and Sonnier can't tease too much about Brian's fate, but they did say that "whether he's with us next year or not, it galvanizes family."

Who’s in the cast of Boston Blue season 2?

Donnie Wahlberg as Danny and Marisa Ramirez as Baez on 'Boston Blue'

Donnie Wahlberg as Danny and Marisa Ramirez as Baez on 'Boston Blue'.

You can expect to see Donnie Wahlberg, Sonequa Martin-Green, Gloria Reuben, and Mike Amonsen return alongside Maggie Lawson (Sarah Silver), Ernie Hudson (Edwin Peters), and Marcus Scribner (Jonah Silver).

Margolis and Sonnier also confirmed that Erik King and Alisha Wainwright will reprise their roles as Chris and Kristina, Lena's father and half-sister. They also teased more from Ward Horton's Thad Longfellow, Mae's political opponent.

Marisa Ramirez will also return as Maria Baez, who accepts Danny's invitation to join him in Boston in the finale. Will Baez, who met Danny as a detective in New York City, start working with the BPD, too? Margolis says he and the writers are "slow-rolling" her storyline.

"She still has a life to sort out," he says. "She has an ailing mother and she has obviously a child, plus a career to sort out. So while the determination to continue to be together and spend more time together is real, [she and Danny] are still figuring things out. It'll be a little bit in flux, but it will be something that we get into early in the second season. It wouldn't be good TV without conflict."

When does Boston Blue season 2 come out?

As of this writing, there is no official release date for *Boston Blue’s* second season. CBS has, however, confirmed it will be part of its 2026-2027 lineup.
