Jared PadaleckiandJensen Ackles starred as brothers Sam and Dean Winchester on the beloved CW series, Supernatural, throughout its entire 15-season run. While Sam and Dean are typically pretty serious, their off-screen counterparts were quite a bit sillier while on the show's set.
During a Q&A panel at the January 2026 Supernatural Convention in Las Vegas, Ackles and Misha Collins, who played angel Castiel, shared behind-the-scenes facts about the series. Ackles revealed that he and Padalecki once got kicked off the show's set because they were continuously trying to get Collins to break character.
Collins, who joined the Supernatural cast during its fourth season, interjected that it was a common occurrence for Padalecki and Ackles to try to get him to laugh while filming.
"The way it worked on a normal filming day on Supernatural, the routine was we'd go in, we would do a quick rehearsal," said Collins during the panel. "Everybody more or less knew their lines. We'd block it out and then we come in and we'd shoot the first setup and the camera would be typically on me with Jared and Jensen. I'm talking to Jared and Jensen. The camera would be on me and Jared and Jensen would make it their mission to f--k me up by making me laugh, for a couple of hours."
Collins said he would try different techniques like biting his cheeks or "star[ing] off into the distance" to stop himself from laughing. However, "none of them ever worked."

Ackles said that he and Padalecki's behavior toward Collins frustrated one of the episode's directors, Nina Lopez-Corrado. According to Ackles, Lopez-Corrado told them to leave the set, even though they were filming a scene with Sam, Dean, and Castiel.
Collins then explained that Padalecki and Ackles were able to be dismissed because their characters "had already gotten their coverage." Collins also said that the members of the show's crew were tasked to read "Jared and Jensen's lines" while he acted out Castiel's parts in front of the camera.
"It was the best acting I've seen him do on the show," quipped Ackles.
Ackles, Collins, and Padalecki remained on the Supernatural cast until the show's final season, which ended in 2020.
