Whoopi Goldberg has spoken out in support of Elliot Page after criticism over his role in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. The actor’s casting had sparked debate before the film’s release, with some critics questioning Nolan’s decision.

Goldberg expressed her opinion on The View and stated that people who don’t like a movie can choose not to watch it. Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin also weighed in, praising the film for its themes and message.

On Tuesday, July 21 episode of The View, Goldberg criticized the backlash around The Odyssey. She said some conservative critics judged the movie before they saw it. She added, “If you don’t wanna see it, then don’t go see it. Why do you care who’s cast in it? I don’t understand this idea that if we hate it, everybody must hate it.”

Some criticism focused on Page, a trans man, playing the Greek soldier Sinon. Previously, Page collaborated with Nolan in the 2010 movie Inception. Goldberg argued that movies are fictional and said people do not need to attack something they have not seen.

According to US Magazine, Griffin agreed with Goldberg and praised The Odyssey as a strong film. “It is a masterpiece. It is a phenomenal film,” she said. She also highlighted the movie’s messages about family, faith, institutions, and the risks of war.

Griffin argued that some conservatives were focusing too heavily on “woke” debates instead of the film’s broader themes.

The Odyssey also stars Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland and Zendaya. The movie grossed over $300 million in its first week of release. Before release, Nolan told The Telegraph that he did not care about the casting discussions because people had not seen the film. He wanted to make the best film he could and adapt it in his own way,” he said.
