Wanda Sykes shared the secret to her longtime marriage to her wife, Alex Sykes, during an exclusive interview with PEOPLE
The couple met on a ferry ride in 2006 and wed two years later in a private ceremony in Las Vegas, on Oct. 25, 2008
They welcomed their twins, Olivia and Lucas, in April 2009
Wanda Sykes is sharing tried-and-true relationship advice ahead of her 18th wedding anniversary to her wife, Alex Sykes.
While attending the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Thursday, Sept. 10, the 62-year-old Emmy winner revealed the secret to their marriage in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE.
“Just remember why you got married in the first place and that you’re both on the same team, I think that’s it, yeah,” the comedian and actress said on the event’s blue carpet, which she walked alongside her longtime wife.

The couple wed in a private ceremony in Las Vegas on Oct. 25, 2008.
A few weeks later, on Nov. 15, Wanda publicly came out as lesbian during an impromptu speech at a rally against Proposition 8, a now-overturned ban on same-sex marriage that had passed in California just days earlier.

“It just came out, you know, because I just got married and so instead of speaking as a supporter, I was speaking as one of the, I guess, victims,” Wanda later explained on The Meredith Vieira Show in 2015.
Wanda and Alex, who met in 2006 on a ferry ride to New York’s Fire Island, welcomed their twins, Olivia and Lucas, on April 27, 2009.

Wanda told PEOPLE at the 2026 US Open what her now 17-year-old twins have taught her during her time raising them with her wife.
“The biggest lesson that they have taught me? Patience and meeting people where they’re at,” she said. “Yeah, it’s like my expectations, but they’re here and just watching them grow and just letting them be kids.”
