Tammy Wynette and George Jones may have gotten a D-I-V-O-R-C-E, but the crooning duo had a hard time severing ties for good.

Georgette Jones, the couple's daughter, recently shed light on her parents' relationship. Days before Wynette died in 1998, Georgette said her mother had been sentimental about her ex-husband George. In one of the last conversations between mother and daughter, the "Stand by Your Man" chanteuse said she would always love the "White Lightning" singer.

"She hated [that] it wasn't at a time where they could have made it work, that maybe had it been different timing for them when they met and were together, maybe it could have been different," the younger Jones said of her parents' union on the *Drifting Cowboys *podcast. "She would always love him. I believe my dad was the love of her life."

The couple, known as the President and First Lady of Country Music, divorced in 1975 after nearly six years of marriage. While married, they released a number of duets and studio albums as a duo. However, the relationship was tumultuous, in part due to George's alcoholism.

"Anybody who's ever known or been with someone with an addiction problem knows that it doesn't have anything to do with who loves them or who's there," Georgette said. "If that were the case, you know, we could all love somebody right back out of addiction. It wouldn't be such a problem. But they have to get to a point where they are at rock bottom and they realize that they want to live and they want to have a different kind of life. And he just wasn't at that point yet."

Wynette and Jones continued to collaborate and put out music together after their marriage ended. Georgette confirmed that they tried to date and rekindle their relationship in the aftermath of the divorce.

Georgette believed her mother hoped to reconcile and wanted to use the ultimatum of divorce as a way to push her father to be better. Ultimately, the couple split for good and went on to marry different people.

Jessica Chastain and Michael Shannon played the couple in the 2022 Showtime miniseries *George & Tammy*. The show, based on Georgette's book *The Three of Us: Growing Up With Tammy and George*, chronicled the rocky relationship between the two country icons.
