No charges have been filed against Sweeney, though the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce could file a police report for trespassing or vandalism

Sydney Sweeney pulled a dicey stunt to promote her lingerie line — and could face legal consequences as a result.

On Jan. 26, The Housemaid star posted an Instagram video of her with a group of people decorating Los Angeles' iconic Hollywood Sign in bras. She captioned the clip — which featured the actress climbing over parts of the landmark to attach a string of bras together — with a tag for Syrn, an intimates brand she launched the following day.

TMZ was the first to report the news, noting that Sweeney obtained a permit from FilmLA, a nonprofit that handles permitting for Los Angeles productions, to shoot the sign. However, she was not given permission to touch — or scale — the sign itself.

"[The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce] did not grant a license or permission of any kind to the production involving Sydney Sweeney as reported by TMZ, nor did anyone seek a license or permission from the Chamber for that production,” Steve Nissen, president and CEO of the organization, which owns the Hollywood Sign’s intellectual property, told PEOPLE in a statement.

A rep for Sweeney did not immediately return PEOPLE's request for comment.

So, why is Sydney Sweeney facing possible legal trouble? Here's everything to know about her Hollywood Sign bra controversy and whether she could face criminal charges.

According to her Instagram video, Sweeney decorated the Hollywood Sign with bras to promote her lingerie line Syrn. She tagged the brand in the clip and announced its launch the following day.

"the secret is finally out… say hello to @syrn 🤍," she captioned a series of Instagram photos of her wearing garments from the collection. "this is lingerie you wear for YOU, no explanation, no apology."

Syrn is the Euphoria star's line of lingerie wear. She shared in the Instagram post announcing the news that the brand would launch on Jan. 28. Sweeney later explained in a separate video the meaning behind the name "Syrn," which appears to be a play on the word "siren."

"our four SYRNs: Seductress, Romantic, Playful, and Comfy," she wrote, captioning an Instagram video of her modeling the different aesthetics featured within the brand.

Though the actress hasn't been charged with a crime, she could still face legal trouble if the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce files a police report for trespassing or vandalism.

Nissen told PEOPLE in a statement that Sweeney's production at the Hollywood Sign was "not authorized by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce" and that they were not made aware of the publicity stunt.

"Anyone intending to use and/or access the Hollywood Sign for commercial purposes must obtain a license or permission from the Hollywood Chamber to do so," he added.

When asked if the organization would file a police report, a rep for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce told TMZ that they "are still investigating how and under what authority (if any) the Sweeney production accessed the site of the Sign."

TMZ also shared a screenshot of an email from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce notifying someone named Marcus about the licensing requirements to shoot at the sign, with the production company "Persuasion Pictures" listed in the subject line. However, a filmmaker from that organization claimed that they did not do the shoot with Sweeney, and they don't know who "Marcus" is.

“We were identified as the production company of record by FilmLA, but this seems to be a mix-up, whether intended by a bad actor or not," Tamsin Orion, the company’s producer, director and cinematographer, told KTLA 5 in January 2025.

She continued, "We were filming in Pasadena on Jan 22, but even my longest lens could not reach the Hollywood Sign from there. As a woman-owned production company, Persuasion Pictures would be happy to work with Sydney Sweeney. But we’d be sure to pull the complete set of permits.”
