The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s newest character may be hinting at the future of the franchise.

The upcoming sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie revealed in an X post on Thursday, March 26, that Nintendo favorite Fox McCloud will make an appearance in the movie.

“Let's rock and roll! Fox McCloud joins The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” the movie teased, along with a photo of the character.

The image shows the anthropomorphic red fox in his signature green jumpsuit and red necktie, along with a white puffer vest and holographic headset. He poses proudly with one foot on top of a wooden box as he stands in front of his Arwing spacecraft.

The actor voicing the character has not yet been announced.

Fox was first introduced in the 1993 video game Star Fox. He is the main protagonist of the video game series, which includes 1997’s Star Fox 64 and 2002’s Star Fox Adventures, among others.

The character also appears in the Super Smash Bros. video games.

Fox’s role in the movie sequel has sparked conversations over whether the next installment will be based on the Super Smash Bros. video games that feature characters battling against one another.

The confirmation of the character was surprising, as Nintendo video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto previously told IGN that he typically doesn’t like his characters crossing into each other’s territories.

“In Nintendo, there's sort of like an unwritten rule. Mario needs to stay in the Mario universe, or Splatoon needs to stay in Splatoon, and we don't use different characters in the same place,” he said at the time.

Eagle-eyed fans spotted the fox in a 30-second teaser clip shared on X last month. However, it was unclear if it was actually the character, as only a portion of his arm and bodysuit was visible.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie sees the return of filmmakers Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, screenwriter Matthew Fogel, and producers Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Miyamoto.

The movie also features several returning cast members, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad.

Benny Safdie joins the cast as Bowser Jr., along with Donald Glover as Yoshi, Issa Rae as the Honey Queen, Luis Guzmán as Wart, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina.

While additional details of the plot have not been officially disclosed, the video game follows Mario as he travels throughout outer space and different universes to rescue Princess Peach from his enemy, Bowser.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters April 1 from Universal Pictures.
