Keery penned “End of Beginning” under his solo project as Djo. He wrote this as his homage to his time in Chicago, capturing the bittersweet feeling of moving away from a familiar place.

“So in a lot of ways, it’s a song about a kind of nostalgia – you know [for] another version of me,” he told NME. “But it’s also kind of a self-declaration to try to appreciate your present [and be aware that] your past will always stay with you and inform who you are.”

At the time, he was studying in Chicago and had to leave after being cast in the Netflix series.

“End of Beginning” is part of his 2022 album Decide.

In the same interview, he revealed that pop star Charli XCX was one of the influences for his album.

Praising her songwriting skills, Keery mentioned a particular song that made an impression.

“A great example is this song from her most recent album [‘2022’s ‘Crash’] called ‘Yuck,’” he revealed, adding, “It’s a great song about such a funny thing: her being over-stifled by a romantic partner, a boy who’s really obsessed with her. I feel like that’s such a cool concept for a song and she just nails it.”

Moreover, he also admires her courage in being true to herself musically.
