Stan Wawrinka came to Roland Garros one last time Monday, May 25, and Paris gave him the sendoff he deserved.

The legendary Swiss, whose career was in the shadow of Roger Federer, made his 21st career and final appearance at French Open, falling to Dutchman Jesper de Jong 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 before departing Roland Garros to a standing ovation that reflected the enduring affection for the 2015 champion.

The 41-year-old won three Grand Slam titles. He announced he will retire at the end of the season. He finished his career ranked ninth in all-time Roland Garros main draw wins with 46.

"Thank you all. It's hard, I don't want to say goodbye to you here," Wawrinka said on court. "It was an amazing experience to be able to share this moment here on court.

"Three hours of emotion, three hours of battle thanks to you, thanks to the support you've given me all these year," Wawrinka added. "You never want to say goodbye when you're passionate about something. I know it was the end; I gave everything for this sports, and I know it is the right choice. I would have loved to be back here, in front of you, but unfortunately this was my last match at Roland Garros."

A tribute video followed with Federer, Rafa Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Gael Monfils all celebrating Wawrinka's career.

The farewell was one of the emotional highlights of a tournament already defined by big-name absences and early upsets.

French Open Day One upsets

The red clay claimed some notable victims before the tournament was a day old.

No.7 seed Taylor Fritz was the biggest casualty, losing to fellow American Nishesh Basavareddy in four sets. Fritz had been considered one of the more dangerous American contenders in the men's draw. Basavareddy, who received a wildcard, sent him home early.

No. 23 Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina didn't fare any better, falling to Portugal's Nuno Borges in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

The women's draw had it's own casualty when 21st-seeded Clara Tauson lost to Ukraine's Daria Snigur, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Former champion Barbora Krejckova came even closer to survival. No. 26 seed Hailey Baptiste saved two match points in a second-set tiebracker before pulling away to win 6-7 (9), 7-6 (6), 6-2. Krejcikova had two forehands to close out the second set and missed both.

Emma Reducani and Sofia Kenin also exited in the first round.

Earlier Monday, the biggest upset of Day 2 came from an unlikely source. Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska, ranked 114th and making her first appearance in the French Open main draw, dismantled No. 5 seed Qinwen Zheng 6-4, 6-0 in an hour and 30 minutes.
