Melissa Rivers Says She Once Had ‘a Big Actress’ ‘Confront’ Her at a Party Over “Fashion Police ”Comments

Melissa Rivers revealed celebrities often confronted her after being critiqued on Fashion Police

Rivers recalled awkward encounters, including meeting an actress they critiqued on a flight after an award show

Still, she defended the show as entertainment, saying everyone critiques outfits privately, but they just did it publicly

Melissa Rivers admitted the celebrities called out on Fashion Police didn’t always appreciate the feedback.

Joining Josh McBride on the McBride Rewind podcast, Rivers, the show’s former executive producer before joining the on-air cast, reflected on a few moments when she was confronted over comments made on the series that dissected celebrity fashion moments.

“I’ve had a big actress confront me at a party,” the 58-year-old shared. “And I’m just like, ‘I didn’t like your dress.’ ”

Rivers also recalled another time when she and her late mother, Joan Rivers, were on a flight from L.A. to New York City the day after an awards show.

“We had just filmed Fashion Police because we would film really early in the morning, and we were flying to New York for something else,” she recalled.

However, while on the flight, they ran into a “lovely” actress whose red carpet outfit had been discussed during the taping — and the feedback wasn’t necessarily positive.

“An actress got on the plane that we knew we had said that we didn’t like,” she recalled. “We knew her. Hugs, chatting. She and my mom were reading the same book, and we’re sitting there going, ‘Oh s--- tonight she’s going to find out what we said about her dress.’ ”

McBride, however, noted that they were critiquing the outfit — not the person.

“We’re not saying that you drown puppies. You made a bad choice,” Melissa emphasized. “My mom would obviously make pop culture jokes and call people sluts and this and that, but again it’s not, ‘Oh my god, they are a horrendous human being.’ “

Still, Melissa admitted there is probably “a painful list” of celebrities who felt insulted by their takes over the years.

“I remember there was one person who came after me and it’s like the next show or the next year she showed up with a new stylist, looking great, different hair color and had clearly had a facelift,” Melissa said, suggesting that while people didn’t always like what they had to say, they often listened.

While there was occasionally blowback for their strong opinions, Melissa argued, “Don’t tell me that you don’t do the same thing talking to your friends.”

“Tell me one person who wasn’t sitting on their couch or looking through pictures and all the time on Instagram and things like that. Now you go like, ‘Ew, I don’t like that.’ You’ll say it to your friends. Now again, I also don’t condone going after people on social media, but that’s not what the show did,” she said. “It was built for entertainment. It was built to be funny.”

“Everyone sits — to this day — and watches the shows and goes, ‘Oh my god, that’s amazing’ or ‘Oh my god, that’s horrible.’ The difference was we did it out loud.”
