Inside the “Bewitched” Cast’s Lives Over 50 Years After the Show Ended

Elizabeth Montgomery's signature nose twitch still enchants TV viewers decades after Bewitched cast its last spell.
Though the classic sitcom ended more than 50 years ago, those who grew up in the '60s or '70s likely remember Samantha and Darrin Stephens and their magical family fondly.
Montgomery and Dick York starred as the quirky couple in Bewitched. Airing for eight seasons between 1964 and 1972, the fantastical series followed the daily adventures of a powerful witch who attempted to live as a typical suburban housewife alongside her mortal husband.
The hit slapstick comedy inspired a spinoff and multiple remakes. In 1977, ABC experimented with Tabitha, a comedy about Samantha and Darrin’s daughter, but it only lasted one season. Then, in 2005, Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman starred in the 2005 Bewitched movie adaptation. Currently, there is a Bewitched reboot in the works.
Here's a look at what happened to the Bewitched cast decades later.

With her enchanting nose twitch and signature pointed eyebrows, Montgomery performed her magic starring as Samantha Stephens. The role earned her five Emmy and four Golden Globe nominations.
After nearly a decade of laughs on Bewitched, Montgomery shifted toward more serious roles, for which she continued to collect Emmy nominations. In the latter half of the 1970s, Montgomery played a victim in A Case of Rape, accused and acquitted murderer Lizzie Borden in The Legend of Lizzie Borden and a pioneer woman in The Awakening Land.
Montgomery wanted to "get beyond Samantha," her former husband and Bewitched director William Asher told PEOPLE in 1995.
Her more provocative film interests were accompanied by publicly backing liberal causes. Criticizing Reagan-Bush policies, she narrated the 1988 documentary, Cover Up: Behind the Iran-Contra Affair and The Panama Deception, the latter which won an Oscar. She also worked with AIDS Project Los Angeles and the American Foundation for AIDS Research.
Montgomery was married four times: first to socialite Frederic Gallatin Cammann and then to actor Gig Young, before tying the knot with Asher. The pair had three children and divorced in 1973. She then married actor Robert Foxworth.
Montgomery died from colon cancer in 1995 at age 62.

Agnes Moorehead as Endora

Though she gained acclaim playing Samantha’s mother, the mischievous witch Endora, Agnes Moorehead had a decades-long acting career before Bewitched. In 1948, she became the first woman to co-host the Oscars.
Two years after Bewitched, Moorehead died of uterine cancer at age 73. She believed that she developed the disease while filming The Conqueror in 1956. Of the John Wayne movie’s 220 cast and crew members, 91 were diagnosed with cancer, as reported by PEOPLE in 1980.
Still, Moorehead performed throughout her last years. In 1971, she costarred in the horror movie, What’s the Matter with Helen?, with Shelley Winters and Debbie Reynolds. Her last starring role was in 1972 in Dear Dead Delilah, and, in 1973, Moorehead voiced the Goose in the Charlotte’s Web film.
Moorehead was married twice, to actors John Griffith Lee and Robert Gist; she divorced both.

Dick York as Darrin Stephens

Dick York was the first actor to play Samantha’s mortal husband, the so-often distraught Darrin Stephens. York starred in the first five seasons of Bewitched before sustaining injuries on set due to the show's emphasis on physical comedy.
After he passed out from pain and suffered an epileptic seizure while filming, York left the show for good. Though the series went on to cast a new Darrin, York remained bedridden for months and reportedly struggled with an addiction to painkillers, per a 2024 special about the series.
In the early 1980s, York went back to acting briefly, earning two television credits. In his final years, York founded Acting for Life, a charity to help people without housing and others in need, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The TV dad was also a father in real life: York had three children with his wife, Joan Alt. He died in 1992 at age 63.

Dick Sargent as Darrin Stephens

Known professionally as Dick Sargent, Richard Stanford Cox joined the show in its sixth season. Taking over for York, he became the new face of Darrin.
Sargent continued to work in film following the end of Bewitched. His credits include crime drama Hardcore and the sci-fi horror film Parts: The Clonus Horror. In 1984, he became a TV dad again, playing a widowed father in the sitcom Down to Earth.
At the same time, Sargent advocated for Christian Children’s Fund, Special Olympics, World Hunger, AIDS Project Los Angeles and the American Foundation for AIDS Research.
Then, in 1991 on National Coming Out Day, Sargent announced that he was gay, calling himself a “retroactive role model,” The Washington Post reported. The next year, Sargent and costar Montgomery served as grand marshals of the Los Angeles Gay Pride parade, the Los Angeles Times shared.
Sargent died in 1994 at age 64.

Remember the baby from Bewitched? Well, she’s all grown up.
Now in their 60s, twin sisters Erin and Diane Murphy first played Tabitha, the Stephens’ daughter, at age 2. Though they started off sharing the role during Bewitched’s second season, Erin later took over as the siblings began to diverge in appearance.
After debuting in Bewitched, Erin appeared in more than 80 TV commercials, including a detergent ad alongside Ronald Reagan. The child star was often cast ahead of peers Helen Hunt and Jodie Foster.
However, at 8 years old, Erin went back to a normal childhood in California and didn't return to acting for decades. In 1999, Erin told PEOPLE that she didn’t regret her break from showbusiness because it allowed her to raise a family of her own.
She added, “Scripts are sent to me all the time, and I haven’t seen anything good enough to have me gone for 12 hours a day.”
Erin has two children with her first husband Terry Rogers, one with her second husband Eric Eden and three more with her current husband, Darren Dunckel.
Erin eventually returned to the screen in 2010, serving as a TV host and appearing in some reality TV, including Craft Lab and Groomer Has It. Diane, on the other hand, has stayed out of the spotlight, working as an analyst for a medical device firm.
In a February 2026 interview, Erin revealed she would love to be part of the Bewitched reboot currently in development.
"If they asked me to appear on the show, absolutely I would!" she said. "I’d love to be included in some way, and I know fans of the original Bewitched would enjoy that fun reference to the past."

Though not the first Bewitched cast member that comes to mind, David White appeared in all eight seasons as Darrin’s boss, advertising executive Larry Tate.
After Bewitched, White appeared in several TV shows and movies over the next decade, including Brewster’s Millions, Quincy, M.E., Mission: Impossible and two episodes of Twilight Zone.
White married actress Mary Welch; after they divorced, he married actress Lisa Figus, from whom he also later split. White had a son with Welch who died at age 33, as well as a daughter with Figus.
White himself died in 1990 at age 74.
