Earl Spencer issues stark warning over Harry and Meghan treatment: 'Learn from Diana's example'

Earl Spencer has urged others to "learn from Diana's example" in their treatment of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
The 62-year-old said in an explosive interview that criticism of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has "echoes" of Diana in her later years.
His comments come amid the ongoing fallout between the Earl and Buckingham Palace, after a series of astonishing claims against the King in Earl Spencer's upcoming memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.
Speaking to the BBC from his Althorp estate, Earl Spencer said: "If you look at an article in a tabloid about Diana or the couple that you were mentioning, Harry and Meghan, they can be really, really unpleasant.
"And I think it would be really beholden on people to learn from Diana's example.
"I'm not here to speak for Harry and Meghan, but for anyone who's being destroyed in this way daily, it must be such a cancerous influence in their life."
The Earl recalled witnessing Diana's "tears of despair" over hostile press attention, noting she was "really brought low" by relentless criticism.
He described it as a "pity" to see "echoes of that now" in the Sussexes' experience.
Earl Spencer also addressed suggestions that he had sided with Harry, stating: "I'm on my deceased sister's sons' side - both of them. And if either of them wanted anything, then I'd be equally there for them."
The feud between the Palace and Earl Spencer erupted after he accused the King of saying, in the days following Diana's death: "Rest assured, we'll forget her soon enough."

Further shocking excerpts of the memoir have since been released in the Daily Mail, in which the 62-year-old Earl alleges the King was left "giddily elated" upon hearing of her tragic death, while on the eve of his wedding to Diana, the future King is said to have told her "he was very happy to marry her, but he was not actually in love with her."
And the Earl was unequivocal in defending the legitimacy of his extraordinary claims in his sit-down interview, where heinsisted he was "telling the truth".

"I can tell you here and now, those are exactly the words he said," he demanded.
His judgement has been questioned by the Palace, which released a statement in response to the claims in the memoir on Wednesday.
"While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss," a spokesman told GB News.
When questioned about his thoughts on the Palace's carefully worded reaction, he said: "They've sort of smudged that one, haven't they? They've said that recollections may vary."

And overnight, he told the Daily Mail: "It is not every day you wake up to find you've been gaslit by the King.
"It was astonishingly provocative and below the belt because it was essentially trying to say I'd lied without the King being able to deny what I'd said."
He said that he felt the statement was a "rather poor imitation" of Queen Elizabeth's "recollections may vary" comment amid the Harry and Meghan drama.
Earl Spencer's memoir on his late sister - which he says she would be "cheering from the rafters" for - is set to hit shelves on Tuesday, September 22.
