42 years ago, BYU's Jack Morris lived the dream with Detroit Tigers

Younger BYU sports fans might not be aware that Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Jack Morris was a BYU Cougar in the 1970s. It's true.

Morris, one of the best big-game pitchers of his generation, won the 1984 World Series with the Detroit Tigers. He later won the 1991 World Series with the Minnesota Twins and then the 1992 World Series with the Toronto Blue Jays.

You could ask why we're remembering Jack Morris now, as opposed to October, when the World Series is held. The reasoning is simple enough: Late May calls to mind one of the high points of Jack Morris's brilliant career, because it was in late May of 1984 that Morris and his Detroit Tigers hit a high point.

Before the month of May ended in 1984, Jack Morris had already notched 10 wins as a Tiger starting pitcher. That's crazy. He was 10-1 before the end of May. He threw a no-hitter on national television (the NBC Game of the Week) against the Chicago White Sox in the Windy City at old Comiskey Park. With Morris leading the way, the Tigers surged to a 35-5 record in their first 40 games. They -- and Morris -- cruised through the final four months of the 1984 regular season. They won the American League East Division by 15 games and then roared through the playoffs and World Series to win the Tigers' first world championship since 1968.

In the 1984 playoffs, Morris went 3-0. He threw two complete games in the World Series. He dominated. This was the kind of excellence which formed the foundation of a Hall of Fame career. Jack Morris went from BYU to the World Series winner's circle. Few BYU athletes have been as great in their pro careers as Morris was.
